Decorated Chick Cookies!

decorated chick cookies

One chick is back in the nest from college for spring break and I’ll have the other for a few precious days beginning tomorrow night so before I take a few days off to enjoy being a mother hen again I wanted to show you how easy these little cookie chicks are to make. I could say I was making them for my chicks homecoming, (how cute would that be) but I really made them to try out for an… [Read More]

Founding Father Cookies

Can you guess which founding father these cookies represent? Here’s another hint… I bet you’re getting warm. What about if I added bifocal glasses? Over the past few years, I am personally thankful he invented these. I could not decorate cookies without my ‘cheaters’. 🙂 Here’s all the clues together. If you guessed Benjamin Franklin, you’re right! Bowers Museum in Santa Ana is having an exhibit of his personal items and it’s a wonderful trip for kids. I made quite… [Read More]

Cookies For The Congressman

Republican Elephant Decorated Cookies

I’m happy to be of service to my country. If just to contribute to a Congressional staff’s retreat dinner’s dessert. I wonder if the differences in Congress could be discussed more pleasantly over a plate of cookies and milk. Just a thought. 🙂

Champagne Flute Decorated Cookies

I’m popping the cork this Valentine’s to say … You go to my head, Valentine! If you wish to toast your love or friendships this Valentine’s Day these cookies couldn’t be easier to make.Draw a champagne flute out of card stock to use as a cookie cutter template. In-fill with thinned golden colored icing (I used Ameri-Color Gold with just a touch of Wilton Lemon Yellow), sprinkle gold dragees (I used small and large sized) from the bottom up to… [Read More]

How To Make Glass Heart Cookies

glass heart cookie West Elm valentine cookie decorating workshop-5882

That’s what I call these cookies that have a melted hard candy center. I make them every year but this time I’m going to show you how to make them too. You’ll need cinnamon candies or red lollipops or Life Savors. Any hard candy that is red. Pulverize the candy to a powder. I use my Cuisinart Mini Mate Chopper. It does a fabulous job in a few pulses. Spoon the candy powder into a cutout space you’ve made in… [Read More]

Cookie Decorating Tip: Straight Lines

This past weekend I was making some sample Valentine’s Day cookies and I needed very straight lines to create a dotted Swiss look. First, I thought to use a ruler marking the cookie with an edible pen but using a ruler is cumbersome and I didn’t want hard contact on the cookie. I decided to place a string over the cookie and secure the ends with tape on my pastry board. The string acted as my guideline. For every new… [Read More]

Mini Snowflake Cookies

Good things do come in small packages.   Especially in bite sized ones. After icing the cookies with thinned icing and letting them dry, I brushed them with aqua colored luster powder for a soft blush of color. I then piped the details on the cookie and finished with a single silver dragee in the center. For the presentation I used paper loaf pans that I never got around to using for baking cranberry bread for Thanksgiving. Another small package and… [Read More]

Meringue Mushrooms

Meringue Mushrooms are a special treat at Christmas time. I’ve usedthem to decorate Buche du Noels but I like to make them to give as gifts because they’re different from the regular holiday cookies. They present nicely in a small decorative basket, a mushroom basket from the store or even wrapped up in a cello bag tied with a festive ribbon. Things needed~1/2 c. egg whites, room temp. (3 to 4 large eggs)1/8 tsp. table salt1/4 tsp. cream of tarter1… [Read More]

Flurries of The Heart

I wished for a snow day today to play with all my snowflake cookie cutters. Not only did our usual sunny skies have no intention of performing a miracle but I also found myself on the couch with a cold. Day 3 in fact, so I can only plan my attack when I get back into the kitchen. For a girl who has only been in slightly falling snow once, snowflakes call to me. Every year I would make a… [Read More]

Behind every successful American is a good woman. Dreams and spirits can soar in our land. We are ‘One Nation, under God’. Even if we are individual stars.
